Glycolic acid chemical peels work though exfoliation properties. The peel penetrates the upper layer of the skin and weakens the binding properties that hold the dead skin cells together. This allows these dead skin cells to be dissolved revealing the underlying skin. Glycolic acid, commonly used in anti-aging skin care treatments and skin peels, comes in several strengths or percentages of dilution. You can also dilute glycolic acid further by adding distilled water. Dilution is especially helpful in cases of sensitive skin.
When used at 40 percent strength, the glycolic peel facial improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, sun damage and age spots. Considered a superficial peel, 40% glycolic peels treat the outer layer of skin, and the results last for up to one month.
Chemical peels have been proven to be very effective in treating acne. Superficial peels offer exfoliation without the excessive peeling associated with medium-depth peels. It can take more of these to get the acne under control, but patients can do them more frequently than medium-depth peels, so they can get the job done. During a light chemical peel:
Your face will be thoroughly cleansed multiple times, I will then use a brush to apply a chemical solution (the epiderma 5 AHA 40% Peel).
You might feel mild stinging while the chemical solution is on your skin.
After 1 or 2 minutes I will apply a neutralizing solution to remove the chemical solution from the treated skin, this may be required multiple times.
